Every morning when Elizabeth Hoelscher walks into her office at Big Brothers Big Sisters Capital Region, she knows the work she does will be life changing.  “Every day I'm at work, I know that day has meaning,” she said. “I see the kids in our program at different events and activities and love knowing that I've helped have a positive impact on their life.” Hoelscher currently acts as the communication and events coordinator at Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is the nation's largest youth mentoring organization.

Spring has finally sprung, and here in the OTCA office, we are gearing up for our seventh annual farmer's market. The Old Town Farmer's Markets kicks off Sunday, May 5, and will continue every first Sunday until Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the corner of Turner Street and Grand River in Sir Pizza Grand Café’s parking lot. This year the market will feature produce, artisan herbs, flowers, candles, soaps, honey, cakes, tarts, cookies, sweetbread, salsa, organic dog treats and more. Local live entertainment will be performed across the street in the Turner Mini Park.

Get ready for a weekend of live musical performances, workshops and more! The third annual Mike Uke Day, Michigan’s largest ukulele festival, is coming to Old Town on May 10 and 11. The weekend-long event will feature film, live performances, ukulele workshops, open mic sessions, children’s activities, strum-alongs and more.

Old Town is cleaning, greening and preening our district to get ready for festival season! Come down to Old Town on May 4 with your gloves, shovel, trash bags and other cleaning materials to pitch in during our Spring Community Clean Up, and help us keep Old Town a great place to live, work and play! We need your help to pick up trash, sweep sidewalks, plant flowers, place hanging baskets and take care of other general maintenance. If you’re interested in lending a helping hand, stop by Turner Mini Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ten thousand pounds of scrap metal, 20 teams, two weeks and one intense competition. That defines the Old Town Lansing Scrapfest. Artists interested in participating in the fifth annual Old Town Scrapfest, a competition in which teams of artists, welders and creative community members use recycled scrap materials from Friedland Industries in Old Town to create new works of art, can now complete an application and return it before Friday, May 10.

The Old Town Commercial Association (OTCA) is hosting a Ribbon Cutting to welcome the six new businesses in Old Town. The tour will be led by the Mayor of Lansing, Virg Bernero, and will take place on Wednesday, April 10, at 11 a.m.
