Old Town is proud to announce Scrapfest 2013! For its fifth year, the competition will begin with one hour to collect scrap at Friedland and two weeks to build a masterpiece. The sculptures will then be displayed during Old Town’s popular Festival of the Moon & Festival of the Sun.
Last year, these two festivals attracted nearly 10,000 visitors to Old Town, with more expected this year. The finished pieces will be judged by accomplished artists and community members and auctioned off during Festival of the Sun. Old Town Scrapfest is a fundraiser supporting public art projects in the historic Old Town district.

You've heard the saying...one man's trash is another man's treasure. Well, you've never seen anything like this. 9,000 lbs of metal. 2 weeks. 18 teams. 1 scrapyard. Yeah, it's intense.
Teams have an hour to collect up to 500 pounds of scrap from Friedland Industries' scrapyard in Old Town. They then have two weeks to conceive and execute their vision and drop off their completed masterpiece to display and auction off during Old Town's popular Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun.
This year Scrapfest grew eighteen to twenty teams that will participate in recycling scrap into art. The teams from across the country were selected for their artistic talents and their interest in repurposing scrap.
The proceeds from the Scrapfest competition will be donated to the Old Town Commercial Association (OTCA) to further their mission of community and economic development in Lansing’s historic and artistic Old Town. For more information on Scrapfest, please call the OTCA office at 517.485.4283.
