You've heard the saying...one man's trash is another man's treasure. Well, you've never seen anything like this. 9,000 lbs of metal. 2 weeks. 18 teams. 1 scrapyard. Yeah, it's intense.
Teams have an hour to collect up to 500 pounds of scrap from Friedland Industries' scrapyard in Old Town. They then have two weeks to conceive and execute their vision and drop off their completed masterpiece to display and auction off during Old Town's popular Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun.
This year Scrapfest grew from fifteen to eighteen teams that will participate in recycling scrap into art. The teams from across the country were selected for their artistic talents and their interest in repurposing scrap.
The lucky 18 teams selected for the 2011 Scrapfest competition include: Team Redhead, Heavy Metal Productions, Junkyard Pirates, Adjunk, Black Metal Works, DNK2 Metal Arts, We-Art-Junk, Arc-angels, Sandstedt & Sons, Iron on the Move, Iron Tree Forge, Family Unit Fabricators, Alka Creative, Team Buzzard, Team Hamco, Metal Detectors, Scrap Art Guy, Junk Anew-bies.
The proceeds from the Scrapfest competition will be donated to the Old Town Commercial Association (OTCA) to further their mission of community and economic development in Lansing’s historic and artistic Old Town. For more information on Scrapfest, please call the OTCA office at 517.485.4283.
