OTCA’s Festival of the Sun, Festival of the Moon and Old Town Oktoberfest attract thousands of people to Old Town.  They are also fundraising events that account for 70 percent of the OTCA annual operating budget; allowing the OTCA to continue its mission of revitalization.

New this year, Old Town is kicking off Scrapfest, a week long art competition where recycled materials from Friedland Industries are used to create works of art! Masterpieces will be displayed at Festival of the Moon and voted and auctioned off at Festival of the Sun.

Great sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses big or small.  Sponsorship levels start as low as $100!  We would love to talk to you further about what a festival sponsorship can do for you.

Please contact the OTCA office at 517.485.4283 if you are interested, have any questions or would like further information.  Thank you for your support!

When Eric and Danielle Merckling bought Scavenger Hunt Vintage in East Lansing in 2006 from friends, little did they know that eventually they would be expanding to include Scavenger Hunt Eco here in Old Town. Located at 317 E. Grand River Ave., the addition to their business comes with an addition to their family. Joining Danielle and Eric in opening the new location is their 19 week old baby boy, Amico.

Long time fans of Old Town, when Eric and Danielle spoke with OTCA’s former executive director, Jamie Schriner-Hooper, it was clear that another apparel store would be a great fit. “We just like it here in Old Town” says Danielle. Specializing in vintage, hand made items, eco-friendly items, and local artists work, Scavenger Hunt Eco makes for a nice addition in Old town. Since they have opened their doors, their baby apparel has been selling fast. Along with apparel, the new store also features art, pottery, and paintings, and is looking for even more vintage and art for their space.

Scavenger Hunt Vintage is their popular, first store located at 503 E. Grand River Ave. in East Lansing. That store opened in 1994 and Eric and Danielle bought it in 2006. Looking to create a vintage store that also featured eco-friendly, organic and sustainable fabrics, they loved the idea because purchasing vintage clothing is eco-friendly as it is one form of recycling. As the “go green” initiative is becoming a world wide theme, a recycled eco-friendly clothing store is ideal. With events such as Scrapfest and Take 5 getting started in Old Town, Scavenger Hunt Eco is opening at a very fitting time.

As Eric, Danielle and Amico organize their store and prepare for shoppers, stop by to say hello and welcome them to Old Town. We are excited to have them as part of the community and as new OTCA members. For more information on Scavenger Hunt Eco, stop by, email them at or visit their Web site at http://www.scavengerhunteco.com.

Top of the Town Awards

Congratulations to Old Town and a great thank you to our strong supporters as the historic district of Old Town is a finalist for five different categories in the City Pulse’s “Top of the Town” awards.  In celebration of our nominations we have listed each award that we are a finalist in and described a way in which we think Old Town particularly shines.

For the “Best Way to Spend $100” there are many unique boutiques and shops such as Polka Dots, Premier Skateboarding, Spin Street Bicycles, and so much more, it’s clear that Old Town has something to offer anyone of any budget!

The “Best Place to Meet Singles” in Old Town would be attending all of the great festivals that take place in Old Town each year.  Beginning with the hottest festivals of the summer, Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun that attract more than 4,000 people to Old Town; why not get out and mingle with the visitors!

Where the “Best Place to Go on a First Date” on those colder days could be the Stage 1210 concert series for a relaxed, fun atmosphere. And as the weather warms, opportunities such as the historic river walk or the First Sunday Gallery Walks offers new couples a chance to enjoy the sites and good conversation.

Some of the “Best Places to Be Seen” in Old Town include our two newest restaurants, El Gallo Loco and Hattie’s Kitchen, both serving fresh and tasty cuisine daily and conveniently located just off of Grand River.

If you’re looking to show off Old Town to friends not familiar with the area, the “Best Place for Out of Towners,“ include stopping by the Brenke Fish Ladder, checking out funky animal fun at Pruess Pets or visiting the nationally renowned Elderly Instruments.

Thank you to everyone that voted for Old Town and congratulations to all Old Town businesses that also received mentions and finalist places in the City Pulse’s “Top of the Town” awards. Be sure to pick up a copy of City Pulse’s April 1st issue to see the winners followed by an awards ceremony to be held April 13 from 5-7 p.m. at The Chrome Cat. Copies of City Pulse are available at the OTCA office. Thanks again to our supporters and hats off to all other Old Town winners.
