Old Town Lansing awarded SHPO grant
The Old Town Commercial Association (OTCA), in partnership with the City of Lansing, has been awarded a Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant through the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to develop updated design standards for the North Lansing Historic Commercial District.
The project will fund the hiring of a qualified consultant to create a comprehensive set of design guidelines that will help guide future development, rehabilitation projects, and façade improvement grant programs throughout the district. These updated standards will provide clear, practical recommendations for property owners, developers, business owners, and community members while preserving the historic character that defines Old Town.
"The Old Town Commercial Association is honored to receive this Certified Local Government grant in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office," said James Lenon, Executive Director of the Old Town Commercial Association.
"Old Town's historic buildings and unique character are at the heart of what makes this district special, and these design guidelines will help ensure future investment respects that legacy while supporting thoughtful growth. This project is about providing clear, practical guidance for property owners, developers, and the community so that Old Town can continue to evolve without losing the historic identity that has made it one of Michigan's most recognizable commercial districts. We are grateful to SHPO and the MEDC for investing in the preservation and future of Old Town."
The updated design standards will serve as an important resource for future revitalization efforts, helping maintain the architectural integrity and charm that have made Old Town a vibrant destination for shopping, dining, arts, and entertainment.
Certified Local Government grants are awarded annually through a competitive application process. Michigan's 42 Certified Local Government communities are eligible to apply and may partner with nonprofit organizations or other public entities to complete preservation-focused projects. The State Historic Preservation Office encourages innovative proposals that support the preservation and continued stewardship of Michigan's historic places.
OTCA looks forward to working with preservation professionals, community stakeholders, and local partners throughout this process. As the project moves forward, updates and opportunities for community engagement will be shared with the public.
Together, this investment will help ensure that Old Town continues to honor its past while thoughtfully planning for its future.
